PURPOSE: A friction element is provided to secure a sufficient amount of torque capacity while reducing the number of friction discs. CONSTITUTION: A friction element comprises a case(104), a first piston(118), a return spring, a pressing plate(142), and a friction disc(144). The case forms a frictional element space. The first piston is located in the frictional element space of the case and forms a piston chamber. The first piston is moved with operation fluid pressure, put in the piston chamber, in an axial direction. The return spring supplies an elastic force, against the operation fluid pressure, to the first piston. The pressing plate is spline-combined in the case.
