The method involves utilizing drive disturbance values obtained by drive disturbance acquisition to diagnose an incorrect multi-shed injection. A drive disturbance signal of a cylinder is compared (2) with a signal threshold. A numerator is activated if the drive disturbance signal exceeds the signal threshold, and the multi-shed injection is deactivated (8) if the drive disturbance signal exceeds the signal threshold and/or the numerator reaches a threshold value. A difference between the drive disturbance signal before and after deactivation of the multi-shed injection is computed.
