In the production of streptomycin by the aerobic fermentation of a culture medium with a streptomycin-producing organism under conditions of submerged growth, the temperature is controlled by circulating a portion of the wash through a heat exchanger (preferably comprising a set of tubes in parallel contained in a jacket through which heating or cooling media may be passed, the dimensions of the tubes and the circulating system being desirably such that the rate of circulation of the liquid is sufficient to prevent the settling of mycelium therein, e.g. at least 0.7 feet per second). Advantageously the culture medium is first heated to a temperature and for a time sufficient to sterilize it, then cooled to the fermentation temperature and inoculated thereat with the streptomycin-producing organism, e.g. Streptomyces grisens. A suitable arrangement of apparatus is described with drawings.
