A fail-safe attachment is provided for coupling an exoskeletal prosthesis to a patient. It comprises a first component 2 which connects to a fixation structure, and a second component 3 which connects to a prosthesis. A safety release mechanism normally prevents the prosthesis moving relative to the fixation structure and but responds to a force overload to permit relative movement between them. The safety release mechanism comprises a torsion force clutch 22, which is responsive to a torsion force overload to permit relative rotational displacement of the components 2, 3 and a bending force release mechanism, which responds to a bending force overload to permit the separation of the components 2, 3. The bending force release mechanism comprises a plurality of spring loaded jaws 37 which engage a complementary portion 12 of the other component. The jaws 37 are pivotable in an over-centre spring configuration, from a first position where they engage the complementary portion 12, thereby securing the first and second components together, and a second position in where the components can separate.
