A protection apparatus for the color modulation apparatus of a projection system comprises a control unit and a positioning unit which is located on the color modulation device. The positioning unit provides the control unit reference signals changing with the movement of the color modulation device. The control unit outputs control signals to the power switch of a light radiation source. The invention also provides a protection method for the color modulation device of a projection system. The method includes: supplying electric power to the light radiation source; controlling the movement of the color modulation device located in the optical channel of the light radiation source; monitoring the movement of the color modulation device, in order to cut off the supply power of the light radiation source when the velocity of the movement is less than or equal to a reserve value.
