The method involves executing a value current analysis for determining an appropriate product amount for each step of a process, and receiving an energy source used for each process step and used energy value. The used energy value is converted into carbon dioxide equivalency values. A product carbon dioxide equivalency balance and an appropriate process carbon dioxide equivalency balance are determined by linking the carbon dioxide equivalency values with the appropriate product amounts using an algorithm. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining energy balance comprising an input device for inputting a product amount for each step of a process.
