The disclosed honeycomb filter (20) is formed the alternating disposition of cells (23) that form a fluid duct of which one end is open and the other end is sealed, and cells (23) of which one end is sealed and the other end is open. Of the honeycomb filter (20), in the upstream region of a partition section (22), a non-filmed region (32) is present that is a region to which at least a collection layer (24) has not been formed and that is at least 5% and no more than 30% of the length of an entrance cell (23). Also, in the upstream region of the partition section (22), there preferably is a non-filmed region that is at least 10% of the area of the cell (23) in a cross section that is perpendicular to the direction of flow of exhaust gas. In this way, when a portion at which the collection layer has not been formed is present in the upstream region, the permeation resistance at the partition of the upstream region becomes lower, and fluids can easily pass through the partition at the upstream region.
