The controller (14) determines the closing response (32) based on an injector signal (VC), such as a coil voltage (VC) of the fuel injector (20). By determining the closing response (32), the pulse width (24) can be adjusted to compensate for fuel injector (20) part-to-part variability, fuel injector (20) wear, variations in fuel pressure received by the fuel injector (20), dirt in the fuel injector (20), and the like.
