A lifting apparatus 1 suitable for lifting a vertically orientated wind turbine tower section (9 fig. 2A) comprises a body 2, 4, 5 suitable for inserting into an upper end of a tower section (9 fig. 2A), an attachment portion 3 for a lifting device such as a crane hook (8 fig. 2), at least two engagement members 6 each adapted to move relative to the body from a retracted position to a deployed position for engagement with a radial flange (10 fig. 2A) of the tower section (9 fig. 2A) and at least one actuator for selectively moving each engagement member 6. The body may have an upper cylindrical portion 4 and a lower tapered or frusto-conical section 5 to guide the apparatus 1 into a tower section (9 fig. 2A). Each engagement member 6 may be an elongate member which pivots about its lower end into and out of a recess in the body 5. The actuator may be hydraulic, pneumatic or electrical and may be controlled wirelessly. |
