A packet structure for a Mobile Display Digital Interface (MDDI) includes a flexible sub-frame length to efficiently transmit large packets. A first sub-frame header packet substantially close to a sub-frame boundary of a packet is transmitted from a host to a client within the packet. The sub-frame header packet contains an indicator of a sub-frame length. If the packet crosses a sub-frame boundary, a second sub-frame length is adjusted by an amount a first sub-frame exceeded a targeted sub-frame length such that the average sub-frame length is similar to that of a fixed sub-frame length system.
