The invention relates to a method for determining the position of a magnetic element (50) located on a transmission selector (20) of a motor vehicle and generating a magnetic field (formula I), said transmission selector (20) moving in two directions in relation to a longitudinal axis (A), namely a main direction (Z) and a secondary direction (X) and the magnetic element (50) being located opposite a position sensor (60) comprising three Hall-effect cells (70a, 70b, 70c). The method consists in measuring three voltages (V1, V2, V3) output respectively from three Hall-effect cells (70a, 70b, 70c). The method is characterised in that it comprises the use of three Hall-effect cells (70a, 70b, 70c) oriented in the same direction in order to measure the magnetic field (formula I) and positioned as follows: two Hall-effect cells (70a, 70b) are aligned on a transverse axis (B) perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (A) of the transmission selector (20); and the third Hall-effect cell (70c) is positioned on the longitudinal axis (A), i.e. perpendicularly to the transverse axis (B) extending through the other two Hall-effect cells. The invention is also characterised in that the method further includes: a step consisting in calculating a ratiometric ratio (P) between the first voltage (V1), the second voltage (V2) and the third voltage (V3), defined by formula (II), wherein formula (III) and k, k1, and k3 are constants; and a step consisting in deducing the position of the magnetic element (50) in the secondary direction (X). |
