Vulcanized natural or synthetic rubber is reclaimed by treating it with a glycolic agent such as the glycols, or the condensation products of the glycols themselves. The glycols may be used in an amount of 0.3 to 6.0 per cent., preferably 1-5 per cent., based on the weight of the rubber. Specified compounds are ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propanediol, butanediol, butyne diol, hexane diol, dipropylene glycol, and polyglycols such as polyethylene glycol, and Carbowax; and dioxan and methyl dioxan. Reclamation may be effected either by heating in open steam or by an extrusion process such as that of Specification 657,614. The rubbers may be natural rubber, isoprene rubbers, G-R-S, butyl rubber and neoprene. Materials that may be added to the reclaiming mix are sulphides, disulphides and mercaptans such as tertiary dodecyl mercaptan; formic acid, acetic acid, 2 ethyl butyric acid, citric acid, maleic acid, tricarballylic acid, tartaric acid, nitniles such as succinonitrile, ketones such as methyl isobutyl ketone, aldehydes and alcohols such as diacetone alcohol, petroleum resin, petroleum asphalt and carbon black.
|
