An illumination apparatus has a number of light sources 12, e g LEDs, attached to a first face of a substrate 36. Optical elements 26 are aligned with the light sources 12. A heat sink 44 is also attached to the first face of the substrate 36. The positions of the light sources 12 and the heat sink 44 are interspersed. Fins 46 of the heat sink 44 are used to direct light 41, 43 emitted from the light sources 12. Heat 33 from the light sources 12 is dissipated by the heat sink 44 via the substrate 36. The fins 46 may be reflective, and their size and orientation with respect to the substrate 36 may be altered to direct and control the light 41, 43 from the light sources 12. A second invention relates to a heat sink having an integral optical element array. |
