Disclosed is a substantially purified or isolated nucleic acid or nucleic acid fragment encoding citrate synthase (CS) from a Lolium species. or complementary or antisense to a sequence encoding CS from a Loilum species, said nucleic acid or nucleic acid fragment including a nucleotide sequence selected from the group consisting of: (a) sequences shown in Figures 1 and 3 hereto (SEQ ID NOs: 1 and 3 to 10 respectively); (b) complements of the sequences recited in (a); (c) sequences antisense to the sequences recited in (a) and (b); (d) functionally active fragments and variants having at least approximately 90% identity to the functional part of the sequences recited in (a), (b) and (c) and having a size of at least 30 nucleotides; and (e) RNA sequences corresponding to the sequences recited in (a), (b). (c) and (d). Further disclosed area substantially purified or isolated CS polypeptide from a Lolium species including an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of sequences shown in Figure 2 hereto (SEQ ID NO: 2) and functionally active variants thereof having at least approximately 90% identity to the recited sequences.
