The method involves determining the modeled temperature of the exhaust gas sensor by a computer program or by a characteristic diagram. The temperature measured with an integrated temperature sensor is compared with the modeled temperature. A defective integrated temperature sensor or a faulty mounted exhaust gas sensor or unsealed places in the exhaust duct are closed when the measured temperature deviates from the modeled temperature beyond a predetermined tolerance range (16). An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring an exhaust gas sensor in an exhaust duct of an internal combustion engine.
