<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device having high transmittance without damaging the alignment of liquid crystal and low power consumption property. <P>SOLUTION: In this liquid crystal display device, at least one alignment film contains organic compound, one surface of the alignment film is in contact with a liquid crystal layer, and the other surface of the alignment film is in contact with an underlying layer. The refractive index of the alignment film monotonically increases in a film thickness direction of the alignment film from a boundary surface between the liquid crystal layer and the alignment film to a boundary surface between the underlying layer and the alignment film. The minimum refractive index n<SB>LC</SB>of the liquid crystal layer, the refractive index n<SB>F2</SB>of the alignment film at the boundary surface between the liquid crystal layer and the alignment film, the refractive index n<SB>F1</SB>of the alignment film at the boundary surface between the alignment film and the underlying layer, and the refractive index n<SB>S2</SB>of the underlying layer have a relationship of an expression (I): n<SB>LC</SB>≤n<SB>F2</SB><n<SB>F1</SB>≤n<SB>S2</SB>. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
