<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To brighten display still more while suppressing increase in power consumption in a color liquid crystal display device having a backlight. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes: a liquid crystal display panel having a plurality of pixels each of which includes a group of subpixels each having different visible wavelength region for transmission; and a backlight including a light guide plate disposed at the back surface side of the liquid crystal display panel and a prism sheet disposed between the liquid crystal display panel and the light guide plate. On an optical path of the light which proceeds towards the subpixel from the backlight, a complementary reflection filter is disposed. Through the complementary reflection filter, only the light in the visible wavelength region which the subpixel allows transmission is transmitted while the light in other visible wavelength regions is reflected. The prism sheet includes a light transmissive substrate 61 and a plurality of prisms 62 provided on the substrate.
