[Also in Group XXVIII] A filter of the candle or like type comprises a head 1 and a bowl 8, Fig. 1, fixed to the base of the head and within which the candles 18 are accommodated and held by a clamp plate 24 in holes 3 cut in the base of the head 1 ; the head 1 has a filtrate-collecting space 4 communicating with an outlet pipe 9a and an outwardly-concave top 11 enclosed by a hollow cover 13 fixed to the head, a diaphragm 14 clamped between the cover 13 and head 1 dividing the space between them into a lower compartment communicating with the filtrate space by an orifice 12 and an upper compartment communicating with the outer air by an opening 29. The candles in Fig. 1 each comprise rings 20 of filtering material. Another form of candle consists of a tube 31 of expanded metal, Fig. 2, surrounded by a roll 35 of filter paper or the like retained by a series of spring clips 36, or by two half-cylinders of expanded metal 39, Fig. 4, Alternatively, each candle may comprise a stack of impervious discs' around a perforate pipe 51, Fig. 5, filtration taking place between adjacent discs at 59 or 60. Contacting portions 55 and 56 are provided, by abrasion, grinding, or the like with radiating grooves or the like. In Fig. 8 circular discs keyed onto the perforate outlet tube 68. each have a series of tongues turned alternately upward, 65, and downward, 66. The discs are pressed into close contact and then released a predetermined amount, shown on the right of the figure, the resilience of the tongues ensuring an even separation of the discs, between adjacent members of which flow occurs.
