PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use the atmosphere as a heat source, and to overcome or relieve part of problems related to conventional techniques. SOLUTION: The expansion piston assembly includes an expansion chamber 124, an expansion inlet valve 128 allowing gas to enter into the expansion chamber 124 from a pressurized gas source, an expansion piston 122 for expanding the gas received in the expansion chamber 124, and an exhaust valve 104 for venting the gas after expansion. At least one of the expansion inlet valve 128 and the exhaust valve 104 is constituted to be opened when the gas pressures on both sides of at least one of the valves are almost equivalent.
