The present invention relates to a self-directed English word learning method and a learning device thereof, that is, a self-directed English word learning method in which strong points of a machine usable for learning are connected with advantages of cards designed for special purposes by level, stage, and field according to the levels of users, instead of the existing inflexible and passive learning methods. The invention enables: the specially designed cards to be divided into stages 1-6 according to the levels of the users by using various colors, pictures, figures, and signs or the like, on the basis of cognitive linguistics; and the cards to be written with various different contents related to word learning according to the levels of the users, so that students from beginner to advanced levels for English can enjoy and naturally learn English words which are the essential factors to speak and write English, through a functional word relay game.
