PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the vehicle transmitting engine power through a clutch and a transmission to wheels from being slid down while the engine is automatically stopped. SOLUTION: A transmission 13 is maintained changed to a predetermined gear ratio (for example, low gear) while an engine 11 is automatically stopped, and hill-hold control for maintaining a clutch 12 in an engaged state is carried out. A power transmission system from the engine 11 to wheels 16 can thereby be maintained in a connected state, whereby the wheels 16 are prevented from rotating by the friction of the engine 11 to prevent the vehicle from sliding down, when the engine 11 is automatically stopped and the vehicle is stopped on a slope. This prevention eliminates the need to prohibit the engine 11 from automatically stopping. Therefore, the effect of improving fuel economy by automatic stop/start control can be ensured. Further, the need to attach a brake liquid pressure maintaining device for preventing the vehicle from sliding down is eliminated. As a result, requirement for reduction in costs can be met.
