The nested trays 10 of a stack of seriesconnected cells are each provided with an outwardly flared portion 11 and are made of a thermoplastic material in a strained condition made, for example, by warming and stretching a tubular band of the material so that when cooled the portions 11 retain the shape shown in Fig. 2. The stacked cells are placed under compression and immersed in a warm bath of a sealing compound consisting of a soft wax or grease of a kind that remains soft indefinitely on cooling. The sealing compound enters the gaps between the edges of the trays and the heat of the bath causes the flared portions 11 of the trays to return partly to their original unstrained shape, a thin layer of the compound being retained between the overlapping portions of the trays as shown at 20 in Fig. 1, The stack is removed from the bath and tapes 36 applied to maintain endwise pressure. The seals 20 prevent loss of moisture from the cells but excess gas pressure causes the seals to yield to allow gas to escape after which the seals close again.
