PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma display device of low electric power consumption provided with display performance of high precision and high brightness. SOLUTION: The plasma display device includes one field constituted of a plurality of subfields, and includes an address period for selecting a discharge cell of emitting a light and a maintenance period for generating maintenance discharge in the selected discharge cell, in each subfield. A base film of protection layer of a PDP is formed of at least two or more of metal oxides selected from the group comprising magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, strontium oxide and barium oxide, and has a peak between the minimum diffraction angle and the maximum diffraction angle generated from a simple body of the oxide constituting the metal oxide on a specified directional face, in X-ray diffraction analysis. A potential of an address electrode is brought into a state nearer to a potential when executing address discharge than a ground potential, during the maintenance period. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
