A primary cell having a magnesium anode has a cathode consisting of a copper sheet 18 carrying on each face a layer of cuprous chloride 21. To secure good adhesion between the cuprous chloride and copper sheet, the latter is formed with raised portions 19 which may be produced by a punch or they may consist of the burrs formed by drilling holes in the sheet. The raised portions 19 may protrude through the layers of cuprous chloride as shown at 20. The cathode may be made by casting cuprous chloride round the copper sheet in a mould or by dipping the sheet in a bath of molten cuprous chloride. When a moulding process is used, potassium chloride may be mixed with the cuprous chloride to lower the melting point. The surface of the cuprous chloride may be reduced to metallic copper by sweeping it with a reducing gas flame or by covering it with tin foil and heating till the surface of the cuprous chloride melts. The cell is made up by placing a magnesium anode on each side of the cathode with intervening absorbent separating sheets and binding the whole with tape. Alternatively, the members of the cell may be held together by pins which connect the anodes together and pass through holes lined with rubber in the cathode. The electrolyte consists of water or sea-water.
