Provided is a motor drive apparatus that can detect malfunctioning of a switching element, in addition to malfunctioning of an electric motor. The motor drive apparatus evaluates whether or not an electric motor (2) or a switching element (4) is malfunctioning, on the basis of the mode of changes in the potential (regeneration voltage) of the contact-point between the electric motor (2) and the switching element (4), when the switching element (4) is turned off after being turned on just for a short period of time, which is a first prescribed period of time (T1). Then, the motor drive apparatus identifies which of the electric motor (2) and the switching element (4) is malfunctioning, on the basis of the magnitude of the contact-point potential after the switching element (4) has been turned on for a second prescribed period of time (T2), which is longer than the first prescribed period of time (T1). In such a way, the motor drive apparatus (1) becomes capable of detecting malfunctioning of the switching element (4), in addition to malfunctioning of the electric motor (2). |
