The device (1) has a unit (7) for detecting surrounding (8) of a vehicle (2) at a region (12) of a charging cable. Connection of the charging cable to the vehicle activates detection of the surrounding of the vehicle. The detection unit comprises a camera system (11) and a sensor system (13) e.g. radar sensor, and generates information representing the detected surrounding of the vehicle. A storage medium (14) stores the information, and a transmitting unit (15) transmits the information obtained from the vehicle surrounding to an external evaluation unit (17). An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring a charging cable for a vehicle.
