<p>A reflection type liquid crystal device, has: a liquid crystal cell held between a pair of substrates (81,82) and having a pretilt; and an optical compensation plate (84) disposed on the outside of the pair of substrates, having a negative refractive-index anisotropy, and having a first optical axis (C1) along the thickness direction, in which the optical compensation plate can be tilted in a first direction (d1) in which the angle of a standard angle (¸1) becomes large when the standard angle is defined as an acute angle formed by the first optical axis (C1) and a second optical axis (C2) of a liquid crystal molecule (831) of the liquid crystal cell when the optical compensation plate is located in parallel to the plate surface of the liquid crystal cell. A projector comprising such a device is also disclosed.</p> |
