A braking system for a wind turbine comprising an electrical generator excited by permanent magnets, said electrical generator comprising armature winding made of coil (1) comprising at least two conductor sections (2, 2'), that forms two or more winding paths that are connected in series for normal generator operation and an arrangement of switching means (A, B, C) or (A, B, C, D) to create an electrical short circuit to selected conductor sections of the armature windings coil (1).
