Class 100(1) Sheets B, such as box blanks, stacked on edge in a magazine 12, are separated by suction grippers 16 and placed horizontally on folding dies 49 to be operated on by vertically-reciprocating plungers. As shown, there are two stacks 14 supported on rods 15, and the blanks B in each stack are withdrawn through gates 13 by three suction cups 16 mounted on a common transverse bar 17, the ends of which are secured'to a pair or double-armed gripper arms 18. Each arm 18 is pivoted at 21 on a first bell-crank lever 20 pivoted at 31. and the outer end of the arm is provided with guidways 24 engaging a pivot 25. This pivot 25 is mounted on a second bell-crank lever 26 pivoted at 27 to the framework 11 of the machine. A rod 28 connects the two bell-crank levers, so that oscillation of the bell-crank 20 about its axis 31 results in oscillation of the second bell-crank 26 about'the axis 27, and the pivot 25 controls the movement of the arm 18 by sliding therein along the guideways 24. The first bell-crank 20 is connected at 32 to a rocking arm 34 by a connecting-rod 33, this arm being rocked about a central pivot 35 by a rod 37 connected to a crank 38 on the drive shaft 39 of the machine. The crank 38 also operates the reciprocating plungers. As shown in Fig. 4, the complex motion of the gripper arm 18 results in the sucker bar 17 following a path 60, and the points on the path marked 1 to 6 represent the positions of the bar 17 equivalent to six equally-spaced points on the semi-circular path of the crank 38. The removal of a blank B from the magazine takes place at an extremely slow rate; it is swung to travel edge first, reaching peak velocity shortly after position 4; and then decelerates gradually to position 6 where it is deposited slowly on the folding die 49.
