The device (16) has a code carrier unit for supporting a code detected by an optical code detecting unit (20) e.g. bar code reader. The code carrier unit comprises a memory unit for storing the code and a transmission unit to enable optical sending of the code. The code detecting unit is designed as a portable unit, and receives an optical signal (22) emitted by the device. The transmission unit comprises a light source e.g. laser, for producing the code and a control unit for controlling transferring of the optical signal. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a piece of luggage at a storage space (2) a system comprising a code carrier device.
