PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sufficiently ensure startability even when a key is turned off during automatic stop while suppressing vibration during automatic stop and restart. SOLUTION: When the key is turned off, the valve timing of an intake valve is set to a first control position with valve closing timing approaching the vicinity of a bottom dead center, and when idle stop is performed, the valve timing of the intake valve is set to a second control position with the valve closing timing advanced in comparison with the first control position and an actual compression ratio reduced. When a shift operational tool is switched from a D-range to the other ranges during the automatic stop (S100), an engine is started (S110), and the valve timing is set to a third control position with the lift of the intake valve increased in comparison with the lift in the first control position and the actual compression ratio of the intake valve increased in comparison with the actual compression ratio in the second control position (S120).
