<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a viewing angle in a VA mode liquid crystal display element. <P>SOLUTION: In the VA mode liquid crystal display element where liquid crystal molecules 111 forming a liquid crystal layer 11 are aligned in four directions by ribs 12 in a state where voltages are applied to a common electrode 14 and a pixel electrode 16, a front-side retardation plate 4 is inserted between a front-side polarizing plate 2 and a liquid crystal cell. A value of Rth+RO is set to 150 to 240 nm when retardation Δn dLCD of the liquid crystal layer 11 is 360 nm, wherein Rth is a phase difference in a thickness direction of the front-side retardation plate 4 and RO is an in-plane retardation of the front-side retardation plate 4, whereby characteristics of black display and those of halftone display of the liquid crystal display element are improved to widen the viewing angle. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
