PURPOSE: A multi carrier reader and a method for measuring the depth of underground materials using the reader are provided to multiply signals which are outputted from transponders by one reader antenna, thereby measuring the depth of underground materials. CONSTITUTION: A transmitter(15) generates different frequency carrier signals, adjusts the carrier signals at each frequency by a predetermined output value, and transmits the carrier signals through an antenna(18). A receiver(17) converts the different frequency carrier signals into digital signals, separates and demodulates the digital signals, and converts the digital signals into data of a fixed format. A controller(14) receives a data signal from the receiver. The controller recognizes the data signal as information related to the transponder corresponding to a corresponding frequency carrier based on a frequency carrier of the received data signal and an output value when the frequency carrier of the received data signal is transmitted.
