An assay for identifying compounds for use in tissue repair comprising the steps of providing a candidate compound which has binding specificity to human beta 1 integrin, bringing the candidate compound into contact with human beta 1 integrin and determining the presence or absence of modulation of the beta 1 integrin or the derivative thereof into an intermediate affinity state conformation by the candidate compound; wherein the presence of modulation of the beta 1 integrin or the derivative thereof into the intermediate affinity state conformation is indicative of utility of that compound in tissue repair. Modulation may be detected by various means such as remodelling of the extracellular matrix, inhibition of caspase activation, a reduction in apoptosis, suppression of F-actin aggregate formation, maintenance of beta 1 integrin expression levels, inhibition of caveolin-1 phosphorylation, increase in perlecan, increase in inhibtors of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) and also enhancement of adhesion-mediated activity of the cell.
