Method of photoprotecting a material against solar UV radiation, comprises treating the material using a composition or integrating the composition into the material, where the composition comprises a dispersion of photonic particles with a mean size of 1-500 mu m, each photonic particle comprising a diffracting arrangement of monodisperse nanoparticles or voids, the diffraction spectrum of the arrangement including a first order reflection peak in the wavelength of 250-400 nm. An independent claim is also included for the composition.
