A voltage source converter (30) comprising three phase elements (32) defining a star connection in which a first end of each phase element (32) is connected to a common junction; at least two converter limbs (34), each converter limb (34) including first and second DC terminals (36,38) for connection in use to a DC network (54) and an AC terminal (40) connected in series with a second end of a phase element (32), each converter limb (34) defining first and second limb portions (60,62), including a chain-link converter (66), each chain-link converter (66) including chain-link modules (68); and a third DC terminal (42) connected to the common junction (44) of the star connection to define an auxiliary connection (72), wherein in use a current is injected into the auxiliary connection (72) to modify a voltage of each chain-link module (68) in each limb portion (60,62).
