PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle surroundings monitoring device which prevents the difficulty of detecting an image of a monitoring object due to a deterioration in contrast when converting luminance data (signal) output from an infrared camera into a digital value of a prescribed bit length to generate a captured image. SOLUTION: The vehicle surroundings monitoring device includes a luminance value converting unit 11 which: compresses the luminance value in terms of the luminance data into eight-bit luminance data by scaling of low gradation where an increasing rate of a luminance value to an increase in a luminance signal level is defined as a first increasing rate (STEP 3) when a temperature corresponding to the level of a luminance signal of each pixel from an infrared camera 1 is outside the temperature range Tw set by assuming a pedestrian's temperature; and compresses the luminance value in terms of the luminance data into eight-bit luminance data by scaling of high gradation where an increasing rate of a luminance value to an increase in a luminance signal level is defined as a second increasing rate higher than the first increasing rate (STEP 10) when a temperature corresponding to the level of the luminance signal is within the temperature range Tw.
