The method involves providing a current signal with current impulses for producing current-magnetic field in a magnetostrictive wave guide (14). A position of an object (12) is determined from delay time of a wave that is produced in a field area (18) in the wave guide based on field change when the impulses are provided to the wave guide. The current signal is started with a preset current raising ramp, where time course of the ramp is defined such that the ramp has no waves. The impulses are provided in connection with the ramp for guiding a detectable wave. An independent claim is also included for a device for measuring a position of a moving object comprising a magnet attached to the object.
