Tetracyclic diazepin cpds. of formula (I) are new; n = 0 or 1; X = =CH, =CR6, O, S or NR7; Z = N, opt. substd. by R2; or with =C-R5 Z is NO2, CN or azido; R5 = H, 1-3C alkyl, 1-3C hydroxyalkyl, 1-3 alkoxy, halo, trihalomethyl, OH, NH2 or acetamino; W = C=O, C=S or SO2; R1, R2 = halo, 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C fluoroalkyl, 3-5C cycloalkyl, 3-5C alkenyl or alkynyl, 2-6C alkoxy-alkyl, benzyl, 2-6C alkylacyl, phenylacyl wherein the phenyl is opt. substd. by NO2, CN or halo; R8, R9, R4, R6 = H, 1-3C alkyl, 1-3C hydroxy alkyl, 1-3C alkoxy, halo, trihalomethyl, OH, NH2, acetamino, NO2, CN or azido; or R8 + R9 = a gp. of formula (i). R3 = R4; A = N or -CR5; B = A, but cannot be =CR5 when A is =CR5; R7 = H, 1-3C alkyl, 2-6C alkylacyl, phenylacyl wherein the phenyl is opt. substd. by NO2, CN, halo; the ring having substits. R8 and R9 can be opt. or partially satd.; with provisos.
