PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer which is inexpensively constituted and properly controls a tension of an ink sheet. SOLUTION: The thermal printer of the present invention makes printing by sequentially transferring a plurality of color layers coated on an ink sheet 3 to a material to be transferred. The thermal printer is equipped with: a control circuit 15 for generating a control signal to control a torque load of a supply side ink sheet shaft 22, based on a winding diameter of a supply side ink sheet roll 8 which is formed of an ink sheet 3 wound around the supply side ink sheet shaft 22; and a supply side torque load adjusting DC motor 18 which is mechanically and directly coupled to the supply side ink sheet shaft 22, and gives the torque load directly to the supply side ink sheet shaft 22, based on the control signal.
