An expanding over-the-wire stent 1 comprises a section 13 of closed-cell construction and a section 14 of open-cell construction. A first crown 15 is provided at a proximal end of the stent and a second crown 16 with free-flows is provided at a distal end. The stent 1 is positioned in the ostium of the jugular vein 31 with the proximal crown 15 expanded in the subclavian vein 32. The stent body is not fully expanded until cap 24 releases the distal crown 16, the tips of which then engage the walls of the jugular vein 31 to anchor the stent firmly in the vein, unable to move either towards the heart or in the cephalic direction. A first actuating means, such as a sheath, releases the first crown and a second actuating means, such as a cap retaining the crown tips, releases the second crown so that they may be deployed sequentially. The stent may be formed by laser cutting, be made of nitinol and may incorporate radio-opaque markers on the stent body or crowns. |
