Cotton woven goods are wet-out with an aqueous solution containing a surface-active wetting agent and a phosphate, rinsed, bleached in an alkaline peroxide bleaching solution and rinsed. The aqueous pre-bleach solution may contain an alkoxylated aryl polyether alcohol, a polyethylene oxide condensate, a sodium alkyl sulphate, a sodium hydrocarbon sulphonate, the stearamide of diethylene triamine, a fatty alkylol amine condensate, a substituted oxazoline, an aminoalkane sulphate of a fatty acid, a sulphonated ester of a dicarboxylic acid or an alkyl aryl sulphonate together with sodium hexametaphosphate, tripolyphosphate or pyrophosphate, and its temperature may be from 120 DEG to 180 DEG F. The bleach solution may contain hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide, borax, sodium silicate or sodium pyrophosphate. The cotton goods containing bleach solution, e.g. from 50 to 150 per cent w.w., may be steamed to temperatures of 160 DEG to 212 DEG F., and then stored in a J-box. The treatment may follow enzyme desizing, acid scouring, or mercurizing processes or combinations thereof. In Example (7), cotton sheeting is treated with an aqueous solution containing sodium hexametaphosphate, a sodium alkyl sulphate and olive oil soap. After rinsing at 140 DEG F. the material is bleached with an aqueous solution containing hydrogen peroxide, sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide, heated to 210 DEG to 212 DEG F., rinsed, centrifuged and ironed. |
