Cardiac output is determined from a single cardiac cycle in an arterial pressure waveform. An apparatus receives an arterial pressure waveform and corrects a part of the pressure waveform that relates to a heart beat for an influence of an ectopic heart beat, of atrial fibrillation on the pressure waveform or of changes in the pressure waveform's baseline. Stroke volume is calculated from the corrected waveform. A individual heart beat is identified within the pressure waveform by defining a start point as the beginning of a systolic arterial pressure increase, and determining an end point by identifying a point in the waveform that has substantially the same value as the starting point, or extrapolating the waveform from the end of the diastole to a point where it has substantially the same value as the starting point. |
