Apparatus for remotely controllably deactivating or partly deactivating a system being an autonomous power unit, where the system may comprise a spark ignition engine power source 6 having an associated actuating system, comprises a regulator 8 associated with the power source. The regulator comprises a deactivator 10 linked to the power source actuating system and having a base and secondary configurations where in the base configuration allows the rated power output by the power source and the secondary configurations allow a progressively reduced secondary rate of power output. The apparatus further comprises a controller 1 remote from the regulator, for transmitting a control signal to the regulator. The deactivator is actuable in response to the control signal to activate either the base rate configuration or one of the secondary configurations. The power unit may be the engine of a vehicle, and the apparatus allows for remote controlled power reduction so that the vehicle may be brought to a controlled stop by the police etc. A deactivation confirmation signal and reactivation signal may be sent between the controller and regulator.
