The drive system (C) has a set of electric drives (A1) supplied with energy produced by a generator using a common supply circuit during motor operation. An energy storage (SP) e.g. chemical energy storage, mechanical energy storage and electrical energy storage, is arranged in the supply circuit. Energy capacitance of the energy storage is large such that maximum total mechanical energy i.e. energy supplied to the supply circuit during generator operation such as kinetic energy and potential energy, is received in the energy storage. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a drive system.
