PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for controlling an active damper, wherein the error of cushion force which is caused by slow-down at collision is reduced. SOLUTION: A controller for a die cushion device 20 includes a die cushion pad 22 which touches a slide 10 and is uniaxially movable linked with the movement of the slide 10 and a hydraulic cylinder 23 for driving the die cushion pad 22, wherein a speed command value which is used for controlling the movement of the slide 10 is corrected into a speed command value on which speed reduction of the slide 10 caused when the slide 10 touches the die cushion pad 22 is reflected, and the hydraulic cylinder 23 is driven by using the corrected speed command value.
