Disclosed is a game system including a stationary game device, an operating device, and a portable display device. The portable display device is provided with an infrared light emitting unit which can emit infrared light. The operating device wirelessly transmits operation data to the game device, said operation data including: data which indicates the detection result of an imaging unit; data which indicates the detection result of an inertial sensor; and data which indicates the operation of an operating button. The game device receives the operation data from the operating device and implements a game process on the basis of the operation data. Furthermore, the game device sequentially compresses a first game image, which is sequentially generated on the basis of a game process, and generates compresses image data. The compressed image data is wirelessly transmitted in sequence to the portable display device. The portable device sequentially receives the compressed image data from the game device, sequentially expands the compressed image data to obtain a game image, and sequentially displays the game image.
