822,639. Making pads from inorganic wool fibres. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Dec. 31, 1956. [Dec. 30, 1955(2)], No. 39670/56. Class 120(3) A pad, especially for thermal insulation, is made from inorganic wool fibres by coating the fibres with a lubricant, compacting the fibres, and removing the lubricant. In a preferred form, droplets of molten kaolin falling from an electric furnace 10 are exposed to a high-velocity jet of air, steam or gas, containing an oilwater emulsion mixed with a small quantity of a waterproofing agent such as a cation-active agent. The fibres so formed are agglomerated on a conveyer 21 where they are compacted by a second conveyer belt 22, and the lubricant is driven off by heat at 30. Instead of kaolin, glass, shales or furnace-slag may be used. The fibres after treatment with lubricant and waterproofing agent, may be agglomerated by deposition on a filter-plate in water, and compacting may be effected by rolling. Specification 625,100 [Group XII] is referred to.
|
