Use of substituted azophenyl-ethane diamine compounds (I) or their salts of acids or organic or inorganic bases, their geometric isomers or optical isomers, their tautomers, and solvates such as hydrates, for dyeing keratin fibers, is claimed. Use of substituted azophenyl-ethane diamine compounds of formula (I) or their salts of acids or organic or inorganic bases, their geometric isomers or optical isomers, their tautomers, and solvates such as hydrates, for dyeing keratin fibers, is claimed. A : (hetero)aryl (optionally substituted), preferably phenyl, naphthyl, 1,3-indanedion-2-yl, imidazolyl, imidazolium, thiazolyl, pyrazolyl, pyrazinyl, quinolinyl, pyrimidinyl, pyrimidonyl, benzimidazolyl, benzoimidazolium, benzothiazolyl, pyridinyl, coumarinyl, pyridazinyl or indol-2-methylenyl (all optionally substituted); R1a-R1d : H, 1-2C-alkyl or 1-2C-alkoxy; either R1,R2 : 1-5C-alkyl (optionally substituted by one or more OH); or R1NR2 : heterocycloalkyl such as pyrrolidine or morpholine group; and n : 1 or 2. Independent claims are included for: (1) a composition comprising (I) in a carrier, where (I) are excluded from compounds (IA) comprising N-(4-cyclohexa-1,3-dien-1-ylazo-2,3-dimethyl-phenyl)-N',N'-diethyl-ethane-1,2-diamine, 2,3-dimethyl-N-[3-(1-piperidyl)propyl]-4-(3-pyridylazo)aniline, 2,3-dimethyl-4-phenylazo-N-[3-(1-piperidyl)propyl]aniline, 4-(4-chlorophenyl)azo-2,3-dimethyl-N-[3-(1-piperidyl)propyl]aniline, 4-(4-methoxyphenyl)azo-2,3-dimethyl-N-[3-(1-piperidyl)propyl]aniline, 4-(3,4-dimethylphenyl)azo-2,3-dimethyl-N-[3-(1-piperidyl)propyl]aniline, 2-[3-[2,3-dimethyl-4-[3-(1-piperidyl)propylamino]phenyl]azophenyl]ethanol, 4-phenylazo-N-[3-(1-piperidyl)propyl]aniline and 4-[4-(2-dimethylaminoethylamino)phenyl]azobenzenesulfonic acid; and (2) a process for dyeing keratin fibers, comprising contacting the fibers with (I).
