A handling apparatus for sheet materials which includes a base assembly 2 which incorporates a main body and at least one contact surface 5, two opposed backrest assemblies 33 mounted on the base assembly 2 at an oblique angle to the main body of the base assembly 2, and at least one restraint belt 4 configured to retain at least one sheet of material in association with a backrest assembly 33 and a contact surface 5 of the base assembly 2. The arrangement of the back rest assemblies 33 with respect to the base assembly 2 defines a void 35 capable of receiving a substantial portion of the backrest assemblies of a further handling apparatus.
